This rare late 19th-century Castelnaudary terracotta urn showcases a striking tulip-shaped silhouette, gracefully tapering down to a sturdy pedestal foot. Unusual for its lack of handles, this piece is a unique variation on the traditional Castelnaudary planters. The smooth, rounded form is covered in the region’s signature green glaze, created using copper oxide. Over time, the glaze has naturally weathered, revealing earthy terracotta patches that add depth and character to the piece.

The urn's elegant tulip design transitions smoothly into a wide flared rim, enhancing its sculptural presence. Its sturdy pedestal foot not only provides support but also elevates the overall form, making it a standout piece for both interior and exterior displays. Planters from Castelnaudary were traditionally used to house citrus trees, though the absence of handles in this example makes it particularly rare and desirable among collectors. The urn shows signs of age-related wear, including areas of glaze loss, contributing to its authentic antique appeal.
